Defensive Driving

Defensive Driving Program

The Laramie Municipal Court offers a Defensive Driving Program that allows eligible defendants to keep a moving citation off their driving record.

Eligibility & Conditions

To participate in defensive driving:

  1. Obtain prior approval from the Court before enrolling.

  2. Pay a $150 non-refundable administrative fee to the Court.

  3. Complete the Defensive Driving Form.

  4. Apply on or before the appearance date on your citation.

You are not eligible if you have any of the following:

  • Passing a school bus

  • Failing to stop and give information or render aid in an accident

  • Speeding 25 mph or more over the posted limit

  • Reckless driving

  • Driving While Under the Influence (DUI)

  • Involvement in a crash

  • Holding a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

Program Details

  • After approval and payment, you have 60 days to complete an online defensive driving course.

    • Courses typically cost $20–$40, depending on the provider.

  • Upon submitting verification of completion, your record will show “Dismissed” rather than a guilty plea.

  • Defensive driving may only be completed once every 12 months, based on the citation date.

  • Failure to complete the course within 60 days will require payment of the original citation amount.

How to Apply & Contact

  1. Call 307-721-5205 or email municourt@cityoflaramie.org before your court hearing date to confirm eligibility and approval.

Choosing defensive driving is more costly than simply paying the citation, but it allows the violation to be dismissed from your driving record.
