City of Laramie Seeks Volunteers for April Waste Characterization Study
LARAMIE, WY – The City of Laramie is excited to announce an upcoming Waste Characterization Study at the Laramie Landfill/Recycling Center. This critical initiative is designed to analyze the specific types of materials entering our waste stream, providing the data necessary to expand local recycling programs and identify new opportunities for waste diversion.
How the Study Works
During the study period, standard landfill operations will continue, but with a twist. Periodically, a designated waste truck will be diverted from the main landfill cell and sent to a survey location. Volunteers and staff will then sort through and categorize the contents of that load.
Volunteer Requirements
The City is seeking individuals to assist with the sorting process. Please note the following participation guidelines:
- Dates: Tuesday, April 21st – Friday, April 24th.
- Time Commitment: Volunteers must sign up for 4-hour or 8-hour blocks.
- Note: To maintain data consistency and operational flow, partial shifts (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, or 7 hours) cannot be accommodated.
- Environment: This is a hands-on outdoor activity at the landfill. Participants should be prepared for physical activity, varying weather conditions, and understand that the job requires the handling of refuse.
Why Your Help Matters
The data collected during these four days will shape the future of Laramie’s landfill and recycling center policies. By understanding exactly what we are throwing away, the City can better invest in infrastructure that keeps valuable materials out of the landfill and supports a more sustainable future.
