Potholes . . . Not Just a Springtime Issue! It all starts with a crack in the road caused by traffic-induced fatigue and temperature fluctuations (e.g. the cold nights and warm days of spring and fall), causing pavement expansion and contraction. Once a crack develops, moisture seeps into the crack and beneath the pavement. As water freezes and expands, the crack increases in size and slightly lifts the pavement. After the ice melts, the pavement contracts and leaves gaps under the pavement. With the weight of cars weakening the pavement, it begins to sink and creates a pothole. So, what can you do about potholes and road conditions? Report it to the City of Laramie Street Division.
