Shell Gas Station/Gateway Liquors--Entrances/Exits

Posted on October 21, 2019 at 1:12 PM by Nancy Oakland-Potter

Q.  There are two entrances and exits for the Shell gas station/Gateway Liquors at 2471 W Jackson St. This question pertains to the entrance/exit onto and off of Cleveland street. There is little room allowed for turning off of Jackson street onto Cleveland into the gas station or proceeding further onto Cleveland with cars turning out of the parking lot. As well, pulling out of the station, turning left onto Cleveland before the stop sign, has a very short distance, and at times blocks traffic, especially for those turning onto Cleveland at the same time. This is particularly true when vehicles are pulling trailers. What is the legal distance for an entrance/exit such as this to be from a corner and highway? Does the station meet these standards? Is there supposed to be a "stop sign" placed for vehicles exiting the lot? If the station meets these guidelines, what can be done to change the location or route of traffic to reduce the bunch up, maze, and hazards that occur on this corner. Including those who rapidly depart the lot without stopping.

A.  The gas station in question was approved by the City in 2011 based on Code and Standards in place at that time and they are not obligated to make any changes now. Since then, the City has updated the policy on access spacing, and is enforcing it on future developments.
