Pigeon Management
|
Abundant food and shelter and the absence of natural predators have created an ideal habitat to support an ever-increasing pigeon population in Laramie. Pigeons have adapted well to life in cities; however, this often brings them into conflict with homeowners, building owners and city officials as the birds seek food and shelter. The most effective approach to solving pigeon problems is generally an integrated management plan that includes both permanent and temporary control methods. Since a major source of food in urban areas is human feeding (both intentionally and unintentionally), one of the first steps in addressing this problem is to inform and educate the public regarding the implications of overabundant pigeons and how concerned individuals can help. The City of Laramie is implementing an integrated pigeon management plan that will include education and citizen involvement. The goal is to reduce the number of pigeons and prevent excessive concentrations of birds, rather than eliminate all of the birds in the population.
For questions or more information regarding pigeon control, please contact Judi Davis, Environmental Health Specialist, at 307-721-5283 or e-mail jdavis@ci.laramie.wy.us.
